"I can't lift like I used to," said Miller, who at 76 is among a growing group of seniors turning to a new type of specialist -- the senior moving manager -- to help with the daunting task of sorting through years of accumulated belongings. The growing aging population means the market is ripe for new businesses offering products and services for seniors.

"The industry is really growing," said Theresa Tucciarelli, owner of A Move Made Simple, a new Aptos-based certified senior moving consultancy business. "When I first started researching this idea two years ago, there were only 200 U.S. companies. Now there are 400. In California there were only seven and now there are 22."

As baby boomers retire, the U.S. population aged 65 and older is expected to jump nearly 80 percent, according to the National Association of Senior Moving Managers, a six-year-old nonprofit. By 2030, the elderly will account for one-fifth of the U.S. population. Americans age 85 and above comprise the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. The association reports a huge growth in the industry since its own inception in 2002.
